Te Whare Tika – Pikitū Noho Marae
Every Whare at Tokoroa Intermediate was gifted a pepeha from Matua Nigel Te Hiko and Aunty Phyllis. Our Whare was blessed with Tokopuhi Maunga and Mangaorua Awa. Although Pikitū was not included in our pepeha, we wholeheartedly acknowledge Pikitū Marae as kaitiaki of this maunga and awa. For us as kaiako, it has long been a dream to take our Te Whare Tika students to Pikitū, to learn about our rich history, and to strengthen their tuakiritanga — their sense of belonging.
We are incredibly grateful for the warm hospitality and beautiful pōwhiri from the haukainga. Our stay at Pikitū Marae was truly special. The facilities were perfect for hosting our 60 students and parents, and the location could not have been better — central to all our activities, with just an hour to Te Awamutu, 15 minutes to the Putāruru Pools, and only 20 minutes home to Tokoroa.
A highlight of our noho was being hosted by Koro G, who shared stories of his childhood at Pikitū Marae — tales of growing up alongside many siblings and what life was like back then. We were also privileged to have Matua Tamihana Coxhead join us to share valuable family history, kōrero about how whānau made a living in the area, and the types of produce that flourished on the land. These moments, especially gathered around the fire pit, created lifelong memories for our students and whānau.
Ngā mihi nui for opening your doors, sharing your mātauranga, and helping our tamariki deepen their connection to their whakapapa, whenua, and identity. Your generosity has left a lasting impact on Te Whare Tika.
